When we are constantly rushing about, high on adrenaline, working on emergency mode, we may be suffering from chronic stress or even burnout. Our body and mind are paying the price. Both chronic stress and burnout can occur in response to everyday stressors as well as to exposure to traumatic events. Chronic stress and burnout are both the result of unrelenting stress, but the symptoms of burnout are different from chronic stress. What is Chronic Stress?
Chronic stress is defined as the uncomfortable response to emotional pressure experienced over a long period, where one perceives little or not control over the stressors. It is often described as the feeling of being overwhelmed, worried and run-down, which create physical and psychological concerns. The stress response triggers biochemical, physiological, cognitive and behavioural changes. Normally stress boosts our energy to provide us with the drive to deal with challenges like exam or deadlines. However, an extreme amount of stress, over a long period, has detrimental consequences for the cardiovascular, immune, neuroendocrine and central nervous systems, negatively impacting our physical and mental health.
What is Burnout?
We experience burnout when we live under constant stress for a long period, where we begin to feel helpless, disillusioned, and completely exhausted. Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental depletion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest and motivation that led you to want to take on a certain role in the first place. Burnout reduces productivity and drains your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and resentful. Eventually, you may feel like you have nothing more to give.
When we feel burned out, the problems seem insurmountable, everything looks bleak, and it’s difficult to muster up the energy to care, let alone take action to help our self. In burnout mode, our whole life is impacted. We feel unhappy and detached which can threaten our job, our relationships, and our health. So, it is important to recognise the symptoms so you can take steps to regain your balance and to start to feel positive and hopeful again.
